Participants to:
- have prior experience paddling sea kayak in a coastal environment
- have paddled a sea kayak in moderate wind condition 10-15 knots
- ability to spend 1-2 hours controlling & paddling a sea kayak
- ideally have understanding of basic kayak design and functions
- ideally have basic knowledge or understanding of marine based navigation
– ideally have understanding of marine environments and weather in relation to paddlecraft
- ideally sea kayaked in group environment (as this is a guiding focused course)

Program Outline: Paddle Tasmania is providing a 3 day Enclosed Waters Sea Kayak Guide course. This is designed to allow interested and suitable participants to complete a full 3 days of training. This course is day based with the finish time around 4pm daily
The focus of this course is on developing technical and safety knowledge specific to
Sea kayaks being used in a marine environment in a group guiding capacity. There will also be considerable emphasis on developing personal kayaking skills to be applied into a group guiding context. Ability to effectively manage challenging marine environments safely.
Weather and coastal water conditions will be simulated at times to achieve intended outcomes of course.

– be able to significantly edge their boat (both on the flat & in whitewater)

packrafts being used on grade 2+/3 whitewater. There will also be considerable
emphasis on working as a team to manage challenging river environments safely.
Depending on water levels the group MAY have the opportunity to tackle some grade
3+ rapids however there will always be the option to walk/portage these.
The group will base camp at Jokers Flat, beside the Mitta Mitta River. This will enable
us to utilise a range of sections on the Mitta Mitta as well as nearby rivers. Some of
the various sections of rivers that the group may potentially utilise within the course

Base Camp Location/Info: Jokers Flat is a medium sized public campground within the

It is accessible to 2WD vehicles but does include a short (100m) slightly rough dirt road
down a small hill to access it.
It can get busy at times but we should be able to find enough space for our group and it
should not be too hard to find us. There is a basic toilet plus a number of official fire
places however not much more. Participants need to come fully self-sufficient for the 3
days as the nearest shops are in Omeo, 40 minutes drive away. Participants obviously
need to bring all of their own tents, camping, sleeping and cooking gear. Note that there
is very limited phone coverage in the area although it can be obtained by driving a short
distance from camp.

ability to catch small mid-stream eddys using technical strokes. It is likely that such
paddlers will have had considerable kayaking experience.

Friday - Sunday, October 27 - 29 2023 at Browns River and Broken Bridge Derwent River
Paddle Australia training course for teaching skills and leading trips on moving water up to, and including, Grade 2 for experienced paddlers.
This training course has been combined with an assessment day within a weekend.
This course is for experienced paddlers looking at demonstrating correct stroke technique in an instructing situation on moving water, breaking down and teaching stroke technique, whitewater rescue techniques and the requirements for Whitewater Guide/Instructor Assessment.
Participants will be assessed against the Paddle Australia whitewater kayak instructor guidelines which can be downloaded from the Paddle Australia website.

Friday 27th October 2023 - 4:40pm - dark, flatwater paddle technique session at Browns River, Kingston.
Saturday 28th October 2023 - 9am - 3pm at Broken Bridge Derwent River training day
Sunday 29th October 2023 - 9am - 3pm at Broken Bridge Assessment Day.
A minimum of 4 additional paddlers are required on the Sunday so that participants can teach skills and be assessed in their teaching. It is the responsibility of participants to organise these extra paddlers for the Sunday.
All paperwork needs to be forwarded to Paddle Tasmania within 3 months of completing the course.

Saturday November 5 Whitewater Skills – This course is suitable for those new to paddling and who want to develop their whitewater paddling skills on Grade 2-3 water. It will look at different paddle strokes, river running, suitable craft, tows and rope work.
Sunday November 6 Rescue 1 - Utilising the skills and knowledge from the previous day you will paddle on moving water (kayaks, packrafts, sit-on-tops) and build on those as well as gain knowledge on the basics of rescuing self and others. Being able to fall out of your boat is the only prerequisite! We'll use the easier rapids above and below the main rapid so it's not too intimidating. This is also good prep before attending a Level 2 Rescue course.
Small group instruction from some of Tasmania’s best whitewater paddlers and qualified Paddle Australia instructors. For this course to go ahead it requires a minimum of 4 participants.
Payment: Once the minimum of 4 registrations is received an invoice will be emailed to you. All payments will need to be made prior to the commencement of the course. If the minimum number is not reached by registration close date the course will be cancelled. Paddle Tasmania will conduct a Whitewater River Rescue Course at the Upper Mersey on the weekend of November 11-12, 2023. The course will commence at 9.00 am at Berlin Wall campsite.
This course is suitable for people with some experience in paddling whitewater - Grade 2 and above.
Assessment for the Paddle Australia Whitewater Rescue 2 Award is possible during the weekend for an additional cost of $25, you will be invoiced separately by Paddle Australia for this once you successfully complete the course

It can get busy at times but we should be able to find enough space for our group and it should not be too hard to find us. There is a basic toilet plus a number of official fire places however not much more. Participants need to come fully self-sufficient for the 3 days as the nearest shops are in Omeo, 40 minutes drive away. Participants obviously need to bring all of their own tents, camping, sleeping and cooking gear. Note that there is very limited phone coverage in the area although it can be obtained by driving a short distance from camp.

Participants will need:
· Tent
· Sleeping bag
· Camp mattress
· Pillow (optional)
· Stove plus cooking pots, utensils, etc
· Lots of warm clothes
· ALL FOOD for the 2-days duration
· Camp chair or similar
· Thermos or similar (optional)
