Paddle Tasmania will conduct a Whitewater River Rescue Course at the Mersey River.
This course is suitable for people with some experience in paddling whitewater - Grade 2 and above.
Assessment for the Paddle Australia Whitewater Rescue 2 Award is possible during the weekend for an additional cost of $25, you will be invoiced separately by Paddle Australia for this once you successfully complete the course

- Principles of rescue
- Throwbagging: dry land
- Passive whitewater swimming
- On-water Throwbagging
- Aggressive whitewater swimming
- Shallow river crossing (Wading).
- Entrapment
- Risk management
- Knots
- Mechanical advantage
- River first aid
- Evacuation
- Towing for gear retrieval
- Simulated Rescues
Participants should bring:
- Kayak/canoe and all paddling gear including several changes of paddling clothing, wet/dry suit is recommended it will be cold!
- Throwbag
- Rescue gear that you normally take on paddling trips
- First Aid kit - waterproofed
- Food for the weekend
- Paper and pen
Accommodation will either be camping at the Berlin Wall or at the Arm River Camp - this will be confirmed closer to the practical course. Please bring camping gear in the case that the location needs top be changed due to water availability.
This course is a prerequisite for the White Water Instructor Training and Assessment Course.

You must complete a quiz BEFORE undertaking the practical component of the course.
You must also submit a logbook including:
Ten Grade 2 Whitewater activities of a minimum of two hours duration in varying river heights and locations.These MUST be submitted within 3 months of completing the practical course.

GEAR
You must provide all your own gear for all Paddle Tas courses. Often the instructors have geary ou may be able to loan. There are also some companies in Tasmania that hire gear. If you are having trouble providing your own gear please get in touch with plenty of time prior to the course.
ACCOMODATION
Unless otherwise stated accommodation will be at your own cost. If you are taking a course on the Mersey River, the Forth or an overnight Sea kayaking course these overnight costs are included in your course cost.
FOOD
You are to provide all of your own food for the duration of your course
LOCATION
This is subject to change depending on weather but expect no longer than a 1.5 hour journey from your original location.
CANCELLATIONS
All paddling courses are dependent on weather and conditions on the water. If we are unable to find a safe and appropriate location for the course due to conditions we will postpone the course to a future time. If we are unable to postpone we will cancel. All effort will be made to let participants know in the week prior to their course, however, last minute changes and cancellations can occur. If we cancel for these reasons we will offer a credit for a later course or a full refund.
Courses are subject to participant numbers, if we do not have minimum participant numbers then we will have to postpone or cancel the course. If we cancel for these reasons we will offer a credit for a later course or a full refund.
REFUNDS
If for some reason you are unable to make the course we will offer a
100% refund 1 month before the course start date
50% refund 2 weeks before the course start date
25% refund 1-2 weeks before the course start date
0% any later than one week before the course start date.
