Course Information

Whitewater Rescue 2 Course:

April 25 - 26 Mersey River Tasmania

Paddle Tasmania will conduct a Whitewater River Rescue Course at the Mersey River. The course will commence at 8.00 am.

This course is suitable for people with some experience in paddling whitewater - Grade 2 and above.

Assessment for the Paddle Australia Whitewater Rescue 2 Award is possible during the weekend for an additional cost of $25, you will be invoiced separately by Paddle Australia for this once you successfully complete the course

This course will cover the following topics:

  • ·       Principles of rescue
  • ·       Throw bagging: dry land 
  • ·       Passive whitewater swimming
  • ·       On-water Throwbagging
  • ·       Aggressive whitewater swimming
  • ·       Shallow river crossing (Wading) 
  • ·       Entrapment
  • ·       Risk management
  • ·       Knots
  • ·       Mechanical advantage
  • ·       River first aid 
  • ·       Evacuations
  • ·       Towing for gear retrieval
  • ·       Simulated Rescues

Participants should bring:

- Kayak and all paddling gear, including several changes of paddling clothing. A wet/dry suit is recommended, it will be cold!
- Throw bag
- Rescue gear that you normally take on paddling trips
- First Aid kit - waterproofed
- Food for the weekend
- Paper and pen 

We will have access to camp and use the facilities at Arm River Camp - This will ONLY be available if participants have a current WWVP check. This is due to the slalom team, many under 18s, also using the camp at the same time. 

Berlin wall is our other camping option 

If water availability is an issue we will let you know of location and camping changes, which may in-cure a small fee. 

This course is a prerequisite for the White Water Instructor Training and Assessment Course immediately following at the Forth River on 27, 28, 29th April.

To complete this course participants will need to complete:

Assessment Tasks:

You must complete a quiz BEFORE undertaking the practical component of the course.

You must also submit a logbook including:

Ten Grade 2 Whitewater activities of a minimum of two hours duration in varying river heights and locations.These MUST be submitted within 3 months of completing the practical course.

Invoice must be paid within 7 days to ensure your place on the course.

20-14 days prior to course 10% of course fee retained

13-2 days prior to course 15% of course fee retained
less than 48 hours no refund.

Please ensure you have been in contact with Paddle Tasmania prior to registering for this Course to ensure you have the appropriate skills and information to take part.
There will be a $20.00 fee to register your qualification with Paddle Australia for 3 years. You will only be invoiced for your PA registration once all requirements for the qualification have been completed and submitted to Paddle Australia.
