Who: The holder of this qualification has demonstrated the skills and knowledge to guide and instruct groups of novices on day based activities in Sea Kayaks in Enclosed Sea conditions:
  • Inside of estuaries, harbours, embayments or other sheltering reefs or islands
  • Maximum of 1.5 nautical miles from shore
  • Wind conditions below Fresh Winds(17kn)
  • Breaking (whitecapping) waves (sea) up to 0.5m
  • No surf
The Enclosed Sea  Instructor is for people seeking a professional certification in Enclosed Sea environments. The Paddle Australia Qualification Scheme (PAQS) course is the industry benchmark certification designed to meet the needs of the paddling Guide and Instructor industry for education, recreational and tourism sectors nation wide.

Pre requisites: Participants knowledge and skills should be at the level of Enclosed Sea Guide. Plus to gain the qualification a minimum logbook is required, these requirements can be found in the Assessment Guidelines. Please pay particular attention to the logbook requirements that need to be logged in your Paddlelog

What Craft: This qualification is designed for Sea Kayaks only

Equipment: It is expected that participants will supply their own equipment including craft, life jackets, paddles etc and present as an Instructor with appropriate equipment ( First Aid Kit, Repair kit etc).

Assessment:
  1. Practical: Completed through the training/assessment day
  2. Quiz: An online quiz is made available to participants upon registration that needs to be completed prior to the practical program
  3. Project: An online project is made available to participants upon registration that needs to be completed prior to the practical program

Dates/Times: 9.00am  - 4.00pm

Area:    Taroona beach, Kingston Beach, Tinderbox peninsula coastlines

Accommodation: Self accommodation or possible paid camping available at The Lea Scout Camp. Participants need to be fully self-sufficient for this  

Course Numbers: Spaces are limited and at this stage to a maximum of 8
participants

Instructors: To be confirmed (both sea assessors and instructors with Paddle Australia)

Participant Suitability: Inclusion in this course is dependent upon suitable prior
experience and is at instructor’s discretion. Please see Paddle Australia Enclosed Sea Instructor/Guide Guidelines to conduct a self assessment of skills and knowledge required to be successful in completing this course.

Participants to:

- have prior experience paddling sea kayak in a coastal environment 

-  have paddled a sea kayak in moderate wind condition 10-15 knots

- ability to spend 1-2 hours controlling & paddling a sea kayak  

- ideally have understanding of basic kayak design and functions  

- ideally have basic knowledge or understanding of marine based navigation

– ideally have understanding of marine environments and weather in relation to paddlecraft 

- ideally sea kayaked in group environment (as this is a guiding focused course)

Program Outline: Paddle Tasmania is providing a 3 day Enclosed Waters Sea Kayak Guide course. This is designed to allow interested and suitable participants to complete a full 3 days of training. This course is day based with the finish time around 4pm daily  

The focus of this course is on developing technical and safety knowledge specific to
Sea kayaks being used in a marine environment in a group guiding capacity. There will also be considerable emphasis on developing personal kayaking skills to be applied into a group guiding context. Ability to effectively manage challenging marine environments safely.
Weather and coastal water conditions will be simulated at times to achieve intended outcomes of course.  

The group will be based in the Taroona / Kingston Beach area. Venues  that the group may potentially utilise within the course

Potential Course Content:
ï‚· revision of technical strokes
ï‚· understanding weather interpretation 
ï‚· understanding and utilizing towing techniques
ï‚· understanding and using wind and wave features to your advantage
ï‚· improving stroke efficiency and placement
ï‚· learning and/or improving edging ability
ï‚· marine navigation

ï‚· Self and assisted rescues 

ï‚· Risk management & safety considerations
ï‚· Improvisation techniques for lost paddles/boats and equipment 

Paddling Equipment Required: All participants should come fully prepared for
numerous swimming activities and ideally utilise a drysuit OR a full-length wetsuit

*Some participants who bring wetsuits choose to bring two so that they can swap a wet one out
for a dry one.
