Course: This course is aimed at anyone who uses a paddle on moving water (kayaks, packrafts, sit-on-tops) and wants to know the basics about rescuing themselves and others. Being able to fall out of your boat is the only prerequisite! We'll use the easier rapids above and below the main rapid so it's not too intimidating. This is also good prep before attending a Level 2 Rescue course. This course is suitable for anyone who kayaks, packrafts or uses sit-on-tops. Venue: Meet 8.45am, Broken Bridge on the Derwent River, River Left carpark (Northern side). 50' drive from Hobart. Finish 4pm. Directions: From the northern side of the bridge at New Norfolk head west along the Lyell Hwy for 10.7 km, (8mins) till you spot a dirt turnoff just before a white cottage on a righthand bend.
Topics include: basic rescue gear, swimming and moving about in water without a boat, gear and swimmer retrieval, easy throwbagging, communication and teamwork., ripping rescue yarns.
Bring lunch, drinking water and energy food. You'll be in the water 50% of the time so come dressed for the water temperature (sturdy footwear, helmet, pfd, full wetsuit + thermals + cag or drysuit).
